The criteria for the Model Communication Program Award state that the program should:

  • Reflect the breadth and/or depth of the communication discipline.
  • Have teaching personnel with specialized training in communication.
  • Integrate curricular and co-curricular activities.
  • Have strong administrative support.
  • Relate to the mission of the particular institution.

Based on these criteria, the Award committee had no trouble in unanimously selecting Oxnard College in Oxnard, California as the 2015 Model Communication Program Award Recipient.

The application packet for Oxnard College was, of course, quite impressive. I could identify examples from the application for each of the 5 criteria but, instead, I would like to sum up the application with a statement from a former student:

“I am currently a graduate student at the University of Southern California, studying social work, where my communication skills are highly needed. While my communication skills have grown and developed throughout the years, they would not be where they are today, without the experience of the classes I took at Oxnard College. I am very thankful for my experience and support the growth and the future of the communication program at Oxnard College.”

Accepting the Award for Oxnard College is the Oxnard’s only full-time Communication Instructor, active member of WSCA and Doctoral candidate: Amy Edwards.
